When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder

The title of this post comes from an old Hymn (1893).

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there

On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there

Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there

Songwriters: C. Barny Robertson / James Milton Black

Matthew 24:31 He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

1 Corinthians 15:51-53

51 Listen! I am telling you a mystery:

We will not all fall asleep,
but we will all be changed,
52 in a moment, in the blink of an eye,
at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound,
and the dead will be raised incorruptible,
and we will be changed.
53 For this corruptible must be clothed
with incorruptibility,
and this mortal must be clothed
with immortality.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  17 Then we who are still alive will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and so we will always be with the Lord.

  1. The day will come When that will be the truth and order of the day. Until then we must keep the testimony of Jesus Christ which is the spirit of prophecy! Today i spoke at church about the necessity to maintain an living and daily base between yourself/myself and God through personal bible reading/Study and prayer.

Because in the end the bible is the only sure evidence we have of things to come. An old saying goes that the Lord separates those WHO resist or believe the book of revelation. I choose to believe it and i believe the Lord can show me the right interpretation as necessary Based on 1 john where IT says the Holy spirit teaches us always.

The roll call yonder will come so let no one disbelieve Even a joy or tittle of scripture. Jesus did not, dont let IT be a separating factor between yourself and the Lord. He gave us his Word to be believed on in totality!

  2. Excellent words Stig. Yes indeed, we need to gain from the entire Holy Bible and hang on to faith in what Jesus has done and promised will do for those that trust in him. I forgot to add that in scripture we must endure until the end (Matthew 24), as there is no such thing as pre-tribulation rapture. We know that many more things are yet to unfold as outlined in Daniel, Matthew, Revelations, etc. It is very important that we keep the Characteristics of Christ as part of our daily walk, repent, read the Bible, pray and praise. Just as it says in scripture, nobody knows the day or the hour of his return.

    1. The scripture you referenced about “Spirit of Prophecy”

      Revelation 19:10
Then I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow slave with you and your brothers who have the testimony about Jesus. Worship God, because the testimony about Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

  3. Here is the interesting history of the writing of the words and music of “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder,” the title of your post:

“James Milton Black Wanted His Name on God’s Roll”
    by Dan Graves

“When James Milton Black came home, his wife saw at once that he was deeply troubled. Tears filled his eyes as he entered his gate. Now he sat down at his piano and in a few minutes wrote the words and composed a song that is familiar to most American church-goers: “When the Roll Is Called up Yonder.”

James Milton Black was born on this day, August 19, 1856 in South Hill, New York. He acquired an early musical education in singing and organ playing and knew such famous songsters of his day as Daniel Towner and John Howard. Around 1881, he moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania where he carried on Christian work through the Methodist Episcopal church. Teaching music during the week, he was a song leader, Sunday school teacher and youth leader in his spare hours. In addition to all this work, he edited hymnals.

He loved young people and tried to win them for Christ. One day, as he passed through an alley, he met a ragged fourteen-year-old girl. She was the daughter of an alcoholic. He invited her to his Sunday school and youth group and she began to attend.

However, one day when he took roll, the girl did not respond. Each child had to say a Scripture verse when his or her name was called. James saw a lesson in her silence. “I spoke of what a sad thing it would be when our names are called from the Lamb’s Book of Life, if one of us should be absent.”

He was not the kind of man to let the matter die with a moral lesson. After Sunday school, he went to his pupil’s home to find out why she had not showed up for class. He found her dangerously ill and sent for his own doctor–they still made house calls then. The doctor said that she had pneumonia. Since that was before the days of antibiotics, death was highly likely.

James returned home. He tried to find a song to fit the thought of a heavenly roll call but could not locate one. An inner voice seemed to say, “Why don’t you write one.” And that is what he did:

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
    And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

When the roll, is called up yonder,
When the roll, is called up yonder,
When the roll, is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there.

“I played the music just as it is found today in the hymn-books, note for note, and I have never dared to change a single word or a note of the song,” he said.

A few days later, he had the sad opportunity of explaining in public how he came to write the song when it was sung at the funeral of the girl whose absence at roll call had inspired it.

    1. Stig, most of what I’ve observed over the past few years reminds me of Science Fiction stories I read a very long time ago.

Here’s only a small sample of those things: cashless societies, artificial intelligence, lasers, planetary weapons of mass destruction, bio-engineering, dna-manipulation, time-travel portals (CERN?), global computer systems (world wide web), cloning, etc..

It seems like many have taken Science Fiction and used it as a play-book for new technology/lifestyles. They forgot to read the entire story, as it never ends well 🙂

      1. Thats true JC. The devil is building his own limited version of omniscience and the roots of the idea was born in Scotland by a man named Jeremy Benton in the 1800s called panoptic society. He experimented on prisoners how to limit their perception and allow the jail wardens to observe the prisoners 24\7 without obstruction.

But we are not of this world said Jesus and our mission is to call people out of IT to eternal life. Bring it on IT will end badly as JC said!

      1. They Do have a backup plan for that also. One of the way to avoid too much scrutiny when IT comes to gold is to keep them as old coins as a collection IF you will. Marked goldbars will be registered and monitored!

Thats what Martin Armstrong says an expert in the field IF there ever was one!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

Brother Andrew continues his teaching on Satan’s strategic attacks:

Our methods of taking the Bible into places where it is not available nor permitted is actually very close to the New Testament concept of transmitting the Word of God. In our Western nations, we enjoy the rare privilege of seeing people come to us for the message. We even wait for them to come and we put up special buildings for them to come to. Then we open the doors and welcome them with a smile.

Such methods make me feel that we’ve responded very wrongly to Jesus’ announced intention to make us “fishers of men.” We have made a beautiful net of our church buildings and have set it up on the shore waiting for the fish to jump in of their own accord!

Our pattern of waiting for people to come to us is exactly the reverse of the Great Commission. Because we have done it this way for so long we have even begun to question the original way that God intended for it to be. What a topsy-turvy world we live in!

We must have the courage, the Holy Spirit boldness, to live a life that is more revolutionary than that of any non-Christian faith. The Lord will give us the courage to work like commandos if we want Him to, but we must go and carry out His commission.

The command has been given by the risen Lord and the call is clear: prepare for spiritual battle! Let’s go in Jesus’ name and do it! We can do it because ever since He first issued the orders, Jesus has given to every generation the ability, the strength, the manpower, and the opportunity to do it.

Although every generation has failed in some way, the first generation almost accomplished it. Almost! In our generation we don’t need to fail. We can fulfill the commission because Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. He who holds all authority in heaven and on earth has authorized us to advance on His enemy everywhere, including across every “closed” border. He still endues us with the power of the Holy Spirit that we might be witnesses to the uttermost parts of the earth.

“Awake and strengthen what remains” (Revelation 3:2). That is the watchword of our ministry to fellow-believers in China, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. What constrains us is the love of Christ; for love, the Word of God tells us, is the fulfillment of all divine commands. I want others to have the one who makes me happy—Jesus. I want others to have what makes me grow spiritually—the Bible.

The God of miracles will bring it to pass!

RESPONSE: Today I commit to going—not waiting—to carry out Jesus’ commission and be a fisher of men in the power of His Holy Spirit.

PRAYER: Lord, give me the boldness to advance against our enemy everywhere—even in so-called “closed” countries.

    1. Boy, did I ever get a dose of that at a religious bible study a few days ago. If one mentions freedom in Christ, the anger rises in the eyes. So very sad. They were learning how to witness to others about Jesus via Andy Stanley. I was invited while visiting. I was so/am so on fire for all the Lord is doing after the conference, I shared how we used to go to laundro mats, the streets and everywhere to share our testimony and invite others to accept Jesus. I shared there was no greater joy than to be out sharing Jesus.

I did not know that none of them had ever been out sharing with others and thought, oh my , someone else would join in. It was met, even after the study DVD, with how it’s better to just walk out the Christian life in front of them. Also that God gave someone cancer before they died so they could be saved….I did catch the anger of religion rising. It was time to just pray. I am so grieved that there are so many churches like this and the very ones who will be persecuting the true believers

      1. Sonshine, what you state is true. Time for all to wake is running out. The truth will be known by all at some point in time. As for going out and about bringing people to Christ — that’s a personal gift and it’s truly awesome.

I have not witnessed like that in person myself, but know I am to keep doing what I am doing. I always ask the Lord to guard my tongue and help me to show the Characteristics of Christ anytime I am around someone. I am sure I may be part of a group at some point that does help lead people to the Lord. Until that day — I pray that these blog postings help in some way — All the glory goes to the Lord and not me.

May the Lord continue to guide you in everything you do Sonshine 🙂

    1. Thank you James, it’s all 100% Jesus and keeping it simple. Stepping out again is so very different than it was when first doing this years ago. Certainly shows the times we are in.
We all are so very unique in the Lords eyes. The same and yet so very different. No small wonder the body was used as an example of parts etc. Those called to pray day and night always leave me in awe of what it would be like to spend that much UN-interrupted time with the Lord.

Peggy, thank you for posting that article. Good reminder and Linda is always spot on!

    2. James, it’s always a delight to wake up and read the posts! God uses them to ground me. In other words, when running into the things out here in the world, the posts are always His perfect timing. Sometimes it’s a shell shocked feeling (no it doesn’t show:) that so much has changed in the hearts of people. I come on here and realize again that it’s not just me, it’s the times we are in, it’s almost time for the roll to be called up yonder 🙂

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57

The five-year-old soccer goalie of Team One was an outstanding athlete, but he was no match for three or four on Team Two who were also very good and they began to score on him. The goalie gave it everything he had, recklessly throwing his body in front of incoming balls, trying valiantly to stop them.

After the third goal was scored against him, he could see it was no use; he couldn’t stop them. He didn’t quit, but he became quietly desperate. Futility was written all over him.

After the fourth goal, the little boy needed help so badly, and there was no help to be had. He retrieved the ball from the net and handed it to the referee. Then he fell to his knees and cried the tears of the helpless and broken-hearted.

His father ran onto the field and said, “Scotty, I’m so proud of you. You were great out there. I want everybody to know that you are my son.”

“Daddy,” the boy sobbed, “I couldn’t stop them. I tried, Daddy, I tried and tried, and they scored on me.”

“Scotty, it doesn’t matter how many times they scored on you. You’re my son, and I’m proud of you. I want you to go back out there and finish the game. I know you want to quit, but you can’t. And, son, you’re going to get scored on again, but it doesn’t matter. Go on, now.” The little guy ran back on to the field and they scored two more times. But it was okay.

I get scored on every day. I try so hard. I recklessly throw my body in every direction. I fume with rage. I struggle with temptation and sin with every ounce of my being – and Satan laughs. And he scores again, and the tears come, and I go to my knees – sinful, convicted, helpless. And my Father rushes right out on the field—right in front of the whole jeering, laughing world—and he picks me up, and he hugs me and he says:

“Son, I’m so proud of you. You were great out there. I want everybody to know that you are my son. And because I control the outcome of this game, I declare you – The Winner!”

RESPONSE: Today I will rejoice in my Father’s love and support. I will not give up as the battle rages.

PRAYER: Thank You Lord for Your love and for declaring me a winner!

He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 1 John 3:8

China’s house church leaders representing more than ten million members met some years ago for a conference to discuss the main problems facing their churches. They ranked their top three problems, and came up with strategies to solve them. At the top of the list was gossip. Leader after leader told stories of how their ministries had been compromised by this subtle sin. One house church leader from Henan Province shared the following experience:

“I went into an area to lead Bible studies for coworkers and they wouldn’t let me into the house where we were to hold the seminar. I asked them through the closed door what the problem was, but they wouldn’t tell me. They just told me to go away. It was winter and I went a little ways outside the town, knowing I must start a fire to sleep beside or I would freeze to death. I wondered what on earth could have made those brothers and sisters turn me away on such a cold night without a word of explanation.

“But a brother took pity on me and brought me secretly to his home. I eventually pried the truth out of him. The leaders in the area had received an anonymous letter denouncing me as a ‘lover of many women.’ Try as hard as I might, I could not get them to listen to me or let me see the letter. Later in another part of the country, I learned the letter had been sent by a brother I had disciplined for moral laxity, and he had sent it out of spite.

“I went to him and he repented. He sent another letter, but because the first one was unsigned, they didn’t believe him. Both of us offered to go there, but we weren’t welcomed. The testimony of the church was ruined. I still have to explain myself wherever I go. It’s a victory for the devil.

“I went with the offending brother out to the countryside and told him to pluck a chicken. We walked along while he did; the wind blew the feathers far over the fields. When he was finished, he asked, ‘What now?’ I told him, ‘Pick up every feather, and put it back on the chicken.’ He said, ‘That’s impossible.’ I replied, ‘You are right. It is impossible, just as the damage your words have done cannot be repaired.’ ”

The house church leaders pledged to be more loving, and to hold more face-to-face meetings with each other to minimize the sin of gossip in the future.

RESPONSE: Today I will thwart Satan’s temptations to offend others by committing the sin of gossip.

PRAYER: Lord, enable me to stand strong today in the face of all that Satan tries to throw at me.
