Christianese

The purpose of this post on “Christianese” is to gain wisdom in the truth. Christianese Definition: refers to the contained terms and jargon used within many of the branches and denominations of Christianity as a functional system of religious terminology.

I am still learning all the time.   Some words used can be taken the wrong way by a non-believer or a new brother or sister in Christ.  This post is not designed to become new religious doctrine, nor is it to be a representation of a Pharisee — it’s not my intention to bring about ridiculous law.

Soul Ties — (some information taken from link provided)  Note that Christians began using the term soul tie perhaps as early as the 1960s; but the term soul tie has been used regularly by non-Christian mystics and spiritualists since the mid-19th century to refer to spiritual connections between two or more people. For example, soul tie is part of the active working vocabulary of practitioners of astrology, theosophy, the New Age, and Eastern religions. Christians ought to be cautious about using the term soul tie around people who may be familiar with the non-Christian usage of the term.   This term is often used in place of biblical “Covenant, Agreement, Knit, Bound, Commitment, Promise, Pledge…”  See http://www.dictionaryofchristianese.com/soul-ties/

Hedge_Of_ProtectionHedge_Of_Protection2

Hedge of Protection —  Often used by Pagans to define “Portals” of protection placed by witchcraft.  Satan used this in Job 1:9-11

Transparent — Used in place of “Clear Conscience”.

divine_appointment

Divine Appointmentthis is a Holy Spirit meeting that took place.  A meeting in which we truly could not have totally planned ourselves.  Some call this a meeting that was inspired and led by God. This term can be confused with New Age jargon.

cotton_candyseeker_megachurchChurch_Atm

Seeker-Friendly, Sensitive, Driven, Oriented — These are churches that strive to bring in more people to their congregation by offering up sweet sounding words.   They tend to stay away from the full foundation of the Gospel and often ignore repentance.  Most of them have greater concern for cash flow, than they do souls.  A lot of them have theatrical settings, some have ATM machines in them and most of them sell items in their lobbies.  These churches do quote scripture, but so did Satan!  The word “Seeker” is a New Age term that refers to someone that is looking for the truth, but doesn’t share in the beliefs founded in the Bible.

drive-by_Evangelismdrive-by_evangelism2

Drive-By Evangelism    —   a negative term that reflects sharing the truth and then leaving.  It could be used to reference a church that brings in an outsider who is not afraid to share the Full Gospel, then leaves and the church then goes back to its old ways.  It can also be used to refer to a person or group who leaves tracts, but is not being led by the Holy Spirit.   New Christians need some help after “coming to Jesus” — they don’t want to be left alone in a dead church that is afraid of allowing the Holy Spirit to freely move.

Job 1:9-11 “Hedge used by Satan”

9 Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Haven’t You placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out Your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”

Psalm_91_3

Psalm 91  “The Lord’s Protection”

1 The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
3 He Himself will deliver you from the hunter’s net, from the destructive plague.
4 He will cover you with His feathers; you will take refuge under His wings.
His faithfulness will be a protective shield.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night, the arrow that flies by day,
6 the plague that stalks in darkness, or the pestilence that ravages at noon.
7 Though a thousand fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand,
the pestilence will not reach you.
8 You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place,
10 no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent.
11 For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways.
12 They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the young lion and the serpent.
14 Because he is lovingly devoted to Me, I will deliver him;
I will protect him because he knows My name.
15 When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble.
I will rescue him and give him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with a long life and show him My salvation.

Samuel18_1_5

1 Samuel 18:1-5 “Covenant or Promise to someone”

When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan committed himself to David, and loved him as much as he loved himself. 2 Saul kept David with him from that day on and did not let him return to his father’s house.

3 Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as much as himself. 4 Then Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his military tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt.

5 David marched out with the army and was successful in everything Saul sent him to do. Saul put him in command of the soldiers, which pleased all the people and Saul’s servants as well.

2Corinthians1_12

2 Corinthians 1:12-14 “Clear Conscience”

12 For this is our confidence: The testimony of our conscience is that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with God-given sincerity and purity, not by fleshly wisdom but by God’s grace. 13 Now we are writing nothing to you other than what you can read and also understand. I hope you will understand completely— 14 as you have partially understood us—that we are your reason for pride, as you are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.

Acts16_9

Acts 16:9-31 — Example Of  what some refer to as “Divine Appointment”

9 During the night a vision appeared to Paul: A Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us!” 10 After he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to evangelize them.

Acts16_11_15

Lydia’s Conversion
11 Then, setting sail from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, a Roman colony, which is a leading city of that district of Macedonia. We stayed in that city for a number of days. 13 On the Sabbath day we went outside the city gate by the river, where we thought there was a place of prayer. We sat down and spoke to the women gathered there. 14 A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was spoken by Paul. 15 After she and her household were baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

Acts16_16_24Paul_and_Silas_Prison

Paul and Silas in Prison
16 Once, as we were on our way to prayer, a slave girl met us who had a spirit of prediction. She made a large profit for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 As she followed Paul and us she cried out, “These men, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation, are the slaves of the Most High God.” 18 And she did this for many days. But Paul was greatly aggravated and turning to the spirit, said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out right away.  19 When her owners saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities. 20 Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jews 21 and are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice.” 22 Then the mob joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23 After they had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to keep them securely guarded. 24 Receiving such an order, he put them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.

Midnight_Deliverance

A Midnight Deliverance
25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison open, he drew his sword and was going to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul called out in a loud voice, “Don’t harm yourself, because all of us are here!” 29 Then the jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he escorted them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”

  1. Very thought-provoking Post, James. We DO use “Christianese” quite a bit, when speaking with other believers. WHEN new souls start coming in, we need to communicate in ways folks can understand.

Here’s something from my professional career that highlights WHY we need to speak clearly, so all can understand: I worked with individuals who had disabilities, much of the time with Vocational Rehabilitation. I was a member of the NRA. Yep, I said it, the NRA.
Now, MOST people would assume I was referring to: the “National Rifle Association” . . . But. . . NOPE. . I was a member of the National REHABILITATION Association (whose primary focus was assisting people with disabilities). . .
There ya go . . . Communicate clearly and not in code form or “Christianese”, because what we think is clear in the “Christian world”, may indeed be a part of the occult terminology too.

  2. Well Linda you have such a straight way of speaking(Good way) that you could join the NRVA= National rifle vocal association in the subdivision of targeted verbal magnocularized targeting of the unsaved and saved for one hit eternal salvation 🙂

    And JC too 🙂

  3. Great post James. I’m guilty of some of these. Wow…more junk to break off and away from. Words need to be spoken with His seasoning not jargon…especially not some of these origins.
Soul ties…these are what are used by so many of us when ministering to someone with ungodly soul ties in need of being broken..

Gonna copy/paste this for my own notes…and mouth!

    1. I just viewed this whole post as educational, as I never had a lot of Church doctrine due to the fact I had been in a state of rebellion for over 30 years. There’s nothing wrong with the use of the words I placed on this post, but it’s good to know they have meaning in some cases to the occult world.

  4. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21).

Notice that the word “death” is first, probably because sadly, the normal tendency is to speak “death” instead of life. We have to make sure that we don’t get “hung by the tongue” since there is a “miracle in our mouths” (when we speak LIFE by lining up our words with Scripture)!

      1. We can speak LIFE regardless of outward appearances, even of an appearance of calamity. We should not be influenced by the testimony of the 5 natural senses, but rather use our 5 corresponding Spiritual senses, and the Holy Spirit.
(Walking in the Spirit and not the flesh.)

      2. I’VE COPIED AND PASTED THIS FROM http://www.julietrue.com
Julie has been interviewed on Sid Roth’s “It’s Supernatural.”
Her “soaking music CD’s” are really anointed. There are many testimonies of healing from them. I was just looking over the site, and found this, another confirmation of the power of the words. She wrote these words in her Testimony:

“In this season of my life, God has been reminding me of the incredible power my words have for creating either life or death. For years I thought I was fostering great lines of communication by talking with my husband and others about all of the problems of the day. Much later I realized that all that time, I had been sowing seeds of doubt, unbelief and negativity in my life…..NOT a great crop to sow.

Since that time of revelation, I have been in the process of re-training myself to think and speak differently……to call things that are not, as though they are, and to make declarations of faith. It’s been amazing to see what happens when I make my words line up with God’s truth, and with God’s desires for my life. I’m beginning to see a whole new type of crop being grown in my life….faith, confidence in God’s goodness, and a “knowing” that He is working ALL things together for good in my life.

Sometimes I find myself beginning to listen again to the voices of fear and doubt in my head, or the replaying of tapes telling me all that I’m not and never will be. I have found that this usually happens when I’ve been isolated from life-giving people for too long, out of touch with the Word of God, or when I’ve stopped serving and helping others.”

  5. Daily Devotional 07/29/16 (note** I changed the wording for Matthew 6:12, to the original wording in the Lord’s prayer. It was written with trespasses/trespass, but later changed to debts/debtors. Someone also changed “on earth” to “in earth” — that is a very strange change!)

    FORGIVENESS IS FOR OURSELVES TOO
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
    Matthew 6:12

Corrie ten Boom often thought back over the horrors of Ravensbruck prison camp and realized that it was hard to find forgiveness in her heart—the true Christian attitude for the former Nazis that would reveal through her the Spirit’s goodness. Where was love, acceptance, and forgiveness in a horror camp where allegedly more than 95,000 women died? How could she ever forget the horrible cruelty of the guards and the smoke constantly coming from the chimney of the crematorium?

A few years later, Corrie was speaking in a church in Munich, and when the meeting was over she saw one of the cruelest male guards of Ravensbruck coming to speak to her. He had his hand outstretched. “I have become a Christian,” he explained. “I know that God has forgiven me for the cruel things I did, but I would like to hear it from your lips as well. Fraulein, will you forgive me?”

Conflict raged in Corrie’s heart. The good Spirit of God urged her to forgive. The spirit of bitterness and coldness urged her to turn away. “Jesus, help me. I can lift my hand. I can do that much.” As their hands met it was as if warmth and healing broke forth with tears and joy. “I forgive you, brother, with all my heart.” Later Corrie testified that “it was the power of the Holy Spirit” who had poured the love of God into her heart that day.

Philip Yancey gives a pragmatic reason why we must forgive that seems very foundational: forgiveness alone can stop the cycle of blame, pain as well as vengeance and violence. The meaning of the New Testament word “forgiveness,” he says, is literally “to release, to hurl away, to free yourself.” The only way to break the chain or cycle of hurtfulness is to stop and ask forgiveness. This allows a relationship to start over and begin anew. The Russian writer, Solzhenitsyn, believed this forgiveness is what truly makes us different from animals. Only humans can perform that most unnatural act of forgiveness that transcends the relentless law of nature.

The only thing harder than forgiveness is the alternative. A teacher once told each of her students to bring a clear plastic bag and a sack of potatoes to school. For every person they refused to forgive in their life’s experience, they chose a potato, wrote on it the name and date, and put it in the plastic bag. They were then told to carry this bag with them everywhere for one week, putting it beside their bed at night, on the car seat when driving, next to their desk at work. The hassle of lugging this around with them made it clear what a weight they were carrying spiritually, and how they had to pay attention to it all the time to not forget and keep leaving it in embarrassing places…Too often we think of forgiveness as a gift to the other person, and it clearly is for ourselves as well!

RESPONSE: Today I will give myself the gift of forgiveness. Is there someone I need to forgive?

PRAYER: Father, I pray today for the power of Your Holy Spirit to enable me to release any cycles of hurtfulness in my life by forgiving others.

  6. Okay, I’m confused.

All of these terminologies are new to me in the last two and a half years. I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve used two of them . So are they all wrong??? It there such a thing as “soul ties”…attachments to others that are spiritually bad for us?

I’m concerned… because I’ve prayed over myself to break what I came to understand as unhealthy ties to others. “Hedge of Protection” is another I’ve used when praying for protection in”Jesus Name” over myself and others.

None of these were ever part of any teachings as I was growing up. Being away from the church for a period I suppose I thought they were coming from those who have gone deeper into their relationship with the Lord.

I don’t want to be doing anything that is not pleasing to the Lord….HELP!!!

Thank you James for this education….I’m going to pray now!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

  7. Vicki,
I am not an expert on this stuff. Just shared some terms that can sometimes be confusing for non-Christians and those that are new. Not saying that we should not use these, just be aware that they can have different meanings to others.

  8. More Disciplined Jul 29, 2016 06:00 am | Glynda Linkous

I desire My children would be more disciplined – more disciplined to keep their minds stayed on Me; more disciplined to worship Me continually in their hearts. More disciplined to praise and adore Me.

I am your King – Do I not deserve your praise?

Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Deuteronomy 10:21 He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.

2 Samuel 22:4 I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

2 Samuel 22:50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.

    Psalm 150

1 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.

3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.
